I Can’t Afford To Help You

There’s a line I’ve heard a lot of times. So have others. The sad thing is that in many cases, it’s not true. It’s not that the person can’t help you, it’s that they don’t want to, and they’re refusing to be honest with you about it.

There are a lot of people these days who have fallen on hard times. We’re doing what we can to earn money and get by. Sometimes we reach out to friends, family and online acquaintances for help. We hope that these people will give us aid when we need it, but it doesn’t always work that way.

I think a lot of people say things like “I can’t afford to help you” and make it about money so they can get out of doing something for another person. They’re selfish and don’t care about you, so they make an excuse. The thing is, it doesn’t hold up in many cases.

When I ask for help, I’m usually asking for things that don’t cost the person anything but a few minutes of their time. Share a link, Tweet, mention something to someone, that sort of thing. The vast majority of people refuse to do anything. I’ve heard others talk about the same thing. They think their friends and online connections could do some little thing, but no one will.

It’s sad when people can’t even be bothered to take 2 seconds to help another person. Some do it because they don’t want competition, some do it because they want to keep others down, many do it because they’re just lazy and selfish. They’re also being dishonest by making excuses for not helping, and they’re not good friends if they won’t even do some small thing.

I’m not well off at all, but I help people. I will do what I can for others, because I want them to have enough money to live and I want them to have success. I’m not worried that helping them is going to take anything from me. If I don’t want to help them or I’m not comfortable with what they want me to do, I’ll be honest and say so. I’m also prone to helping people without even being asked. I don’t care about the credit, it’s enough to know that I did something good for someone.

I say people should try to help each other more, and be honest if you’re not going to. Most of the time you’re only losing a few minutes of your day, and gaining the gratitude of someone and doing a good deed. Don’t be selfish or lazy. Do good for others when asked and enjoy helping others.

  1. A lot of people are simply lazy, and it’s extremely sad. I try to help people anytime it will only take a moment or two of my time. I feel it’s bettering the universe to do little good things every day. Brings good karma. Sometimes, they even return the favor!

    1. I’m the same way, and I don’t even worry about getting something back. Honestly, all I really want is gratitude. I stop helping people if they know I did something and never say thank you. When you need help and someone gives it to you, a “thank you” is the least you can do.
