Why Are Portion Sizes So Large?

Everybody’s saying Americans have a serious obesity problem and that our influence is causing it to spread to other countries. So why is it that American food portion sizes are so incredibly large?

When I go to a restaurant, more often than not I get two to three meals from what I order. Now, I’m cool with it in one respect because I’m getting several meals for my money. On the other hand, I find it to be a problem because A) I don’t always want leftovers and B) Many people feel the need to finish what’s on their plate, so these portions are helping more people become obese C) If people don’t eat everything on their plate, many are not taking it home and wasting food others could be eating.

For this article, B is the issue. Many of us were taught from youth “clean your plate!”, so it’s engrained in us to eat what’s set before us. When the portion put in front of you can feed three people, they’re encouraging you to stuff yourself. Also, many people find it wasteful to not eat what they’re served, so they’ll eat more than what they want to avoid waste. Either way, people are packing in the calories for no good reason.

Why can’t portion sizes be more reasonable? I see no reason to put that much food in front of anyone. Serve 1/2 or 1/3 of the amount, charge 1/2 or 1/3 of the price, and let people order more if they’re still hungry. It blows my mind that many restaurant portions contain more calories than an adult male is supposed to eat in an entire day, much less in a single meal. People claim fast food is the culprit causing obesity, but most restaurants in America are contributing.

Then you watch television and see these diners and such serving portions that contain several pounds of food each. Yes, I said *pounds* of food. What person actually *needs* a 2-3 pound burger? An enchilada with 1/2 lb. of cheese? Seriously? There is no need for that. Restaurants should serve responsible portions at reasonable prices. Let people order more if they need it. Stop encouraging people to eat more than they need. Stop contributing to the obesity problem.

Oh, and have you noticed many places don’t want you sharing your meal, even though they know it could feed multiple people? How about the ones that have eating contests and offer your meal free if you can eat the gigantic portions in a single sitting? They don’t care about your health at all.

Do you agree that portion sizes are far too large at most average eating establishments?
