Cosmetic Surgery: Are You Really Doing it for You?

Cosmetic surgery is becoming more and more popular, and more widely available. Are women doing it for themselves, or are they doing it because of the media?

Botox, liposuction, breast augmentation, reconstructive surgery… More women are getting more procedures than ever before. Even young women are having their bodies nipped, tucked and filled. If you ask most women, they’ll say they’re doing it so they can feel better about themselves. The question is: Do they really want it, or is it media influence making them feel like they have to?

Every day we’re exposed to beautiful celebrities on television and magazine covers. We’re battered with commercials for diets and workout equipment, and told what beauty and perfection are according to media standards. If anyone thinks that these images and ideas don’t have an effect on women’s self-esteem, they’re insane.

Women are getting breast implants, injections to get rid of wrinkles, going on diets to be thinner, and changing their bodies in exceedingly unnatural ways. I believe the media influence is making more and more women unhappy with who they are, and making them want to be what society says is attractive. So they get surgeries and treatments to change their appearance to what they think they should look like. But is it really making them happy?

If you pay attention, the media is telling us all that we need to be thinner, fitter; we need large perky breasts, full lips and high cheekbones. No one is good enough the way they are. Somehow, you’re not as good as you could be, and somewhere there’s a doctor or surgeon who can fix you right up. But do we really need all these procedures? I think not.

I think we all need to do what we can to change the media. Women (and men for that matter) should love themselves as they are. So what if you have thin lips or big hips? What’s wrong with small breasts or a bit of a belly? We are all supposed to be different, that’s the beauty of humanity. The media is trying to make us all alike, just a series of Barbie and Ken dolls coming off an assembly line.

Before you consider getting any kind of cosmetic procedure or surgery, I implore you to really think about it. Do you really want bigger breasts, or has the media just convinced you that you’re not attractive enough as you are? Do you really need fuller lips and wrinkle removal, or do you just think you have to do it? I believe that you should learn to love yourself as you are. Changing your appearance doesn’t change who you are, only how you look. If people won’t love you or be your friend because of how you look, are those vain, shallow people really the kind of people you want in your life? Is it worth the risks to make yourself attractive to someone else? And what happens when someone else comes along, or trends change, and suddenly you’re not good enough again? It’s better to learn to love yourself as you are, and embrace the unique beauty of your true self.
