Bone Marrow Transplants as a Cure for HIV?

An article posted on The Scientist on July 3rd, 2013 provides some possible hope for people suffering from HIV.

Apparently three people have now been cleared of HIV after receiving bone marrow transplants. One man received a transplant from a donor with a rare resistance to HIV, the other two did not. All three men however seem to no longer have symptoms of the disease, and have gone off their HIV medications.

It’s too early to say if this procedure could actually cure HIV or AIDS, but it does provide some hope. Another article on US News offers another possible ray of light.

It’s horrible that so many people have become infected with HIV/AIDS and are dying from it. I continue to hope for a cure. In the meantime, people need to remain aware that the disease exists and not engage in risky sexual behavior, and always use protection. You can’t tell if someone’s infected just by looking, and you should never take someone’s word for it when they say they’re disease free.

Hopefully we’ll have a cure for HIV/AIDS in the near future, If we can do that, I’m sure it will open doors to curing all sorts of other diseases.
