Having Multiple Personalities and Does it Matter?

I’ve thought about this many times over the years. I’ve had people tell me that it seems like I have multiple personalities. I suppose maybe I do. People say it as if it’s a bad thing, but is it really? And who gets to decide that?

I do have many facets to my personality, but so do a lot of people. That’s nothing out of the ordinary. However, there have been times in my life where it seemed like other people took me over. Some of those personalities actually had names. They were like their own people. It made me feel a little odd, but I just lived with it as if it was something that happened to everyone. I figured I just had to be careful, and I had explanations in place for the times when I “wasn’t myself”.

There was a show on TV at one time called United States of Tara, which dealt with a person who had DID or Dissociative Identity Disorder. I loved the show, it actually made me feel normal. It also made me think. Other people who realized I had actual alternate personalities probably thought I was crazy. By medical standards, people like that are “broken” and need to be “fixed”. However, the show introduced me to the concept of “integrating”.

Integrating is when you bring the aspects of your alternate personalities together so that you live one cohesive life. I set my mind to making that happen, and I did. I never got any therapy or medication, I just put my mind to it and made it happen. For the most part, I’m one whole person now, with the best of my other selves. I needed them for a while, then I didn’t, and I was able to handle it on my own.

The thing that gets me is the idea that multiple personalities is a bad thing and something that needs to be stopped. If a person can live that way, why not let them? Is it really so wrong? Sometimes it’s caused by trauma, but if it all works out, why not let it take it’s natural course? And really, aren’t there people out there who give themselves multiple personalities? What’s worse, people who pretend to be more than one person, or people who really are? Who decides what’s crazy and what’s okay? Personally, I think it’s more insane to choose to present yourself as different people at different times on purpose.
