Cutting Back Calories Is Not The Best Way To Lose Weight

Someone just commented on my post about losing weight and it got me to thiking about people’s horrible misconceptions about calories and losing weight. A lot of people think that the best way to lose weight is to eat less, and this just isn’t true.

Believe me, I did TONS of research on this when I was trying to lose that 30 pounds. I had been counting calories like crazy, and limiting myself to 1000 calories a day or less. I was trying to stay at 800-900 a day. I couldn’t lose weight, I was always hungry, and I was miserable. I didn’t have the energy to exercise but I tried anyway. I was a mess.

It turns out our bodies go into “starvation mode” when we don’t eat enough. We pack away every bit of fat and don’t let it go. Unless you’re actually starving, like not eating for days, you’re not going to lose the weight for good. I learned, after much searching and reading, that they key is to eat enough, eat right, and be active.

Now, if you’re consuming 3000 calories a day or something like that, sure, cutting back is going to help a lot. However, if you’re a woman eating less that 1200 calories or a man eating less than 1400 calories on a regular basis, you’re hurting your body, not helping it. The biggest thing is eating good food. 1000 calories of vegetables is a lot different to your body than 1000 calories of bacon and chips. You can actually eat a lot more in the way of calories if you’re eating natural, healthy food, and still lose weight and never have to be hungry.

Seriously, you should see the way I eat some days! I’ll have Buddy Fruit for breakfast, then a big bowl of cream chicken and vegetable soup with bread for lunch, then a big bowl of pasta and vegetable salad for dinner with Ceasar dressing, then dark chocolate for dessert. And sometimes I eat more than that. But it’s all homemade with fresh ingredients and loads of veggies. I don’t have a fast metabolism, I just learned how to eat smart and stay active.

So please folks, stop thinking that the way to a leaner, fitter body is through not eating. It’s not. That’s just bad for you. I’ve seen at least 4 people this week make comments about calorie cutting and starving, and I know it’s a prevalent thought. Eat RIGHT not LESS. If you are actually eating too much, cut back, but only to a safe amount.

I keep telling people, you need to learn to eat healthy food and get your body moving and reduce stress. That’s what most of the experts will tell you too. Diets don’t work. Healthy living does, and will keep working long term. Eat healthy, get happy, and everything will fall into place.

And now I have a craving for fresh corn and broccoli and a yoga session. [grins]
