James Earl Jones And Malcolm McDowell Have Lost My Respect

By now I suppose a lot of people have seen the Sprint commercials where James Earl Jones and Malcolm Mcdowell give dramatic readings of people text conversations on a black stage. Both of these men are talented actors and performers, but I think they must have been seriously desperate for money to agree to do these advertising spots.

I know there are a lot of people out there who think these Sprint phone ads are “totes amazeballs” and all, but I think they’re horrible. Sprint suggests that the commercials are “In honor of the important things you do” but they seem to do little more than shine a light on the inane nonsense that people share via their phones. These conversations only show how far society has fallen, and they’re not amusing.

If you look around on the internet you’ll find two groups of people. There are those who can use whole sentences and proper spelling who think these ads are sad, “heart wrenching”, “a huge waste of time”, and “buffoonish”. Then there are the others who call the spots amazing and hilarious. Not surprisingly, those who love the commercials are very quick to bash and insult those who don’t like them, whereas the ones who don’t like them only express their opinions without trashing anyone.

I think that says a lot right there. People who are into these kinds of advertisements are rude and aggressive to others. They’re not even capable of expressing their opinions without attacking other commenters. There seems to be an easily seen link between the maturity and intelligence of the people commenting and their tastes in television and advertising. On one article a commenter even pointed out that Sprint is obviously seeking a less intelligent audience.

I’ve actually noticed that most of the commercials that are being shown lately are idiotic and meaningless. Half the time I’m not sure what they’re even trying to advertise, and the other half of the time I’m reminding myself not to buy whatever it is they’re pitching, because I don’t want to support the stupidity. I’m not sure what’s worse, the fact that these companies are making intelligent people not want to buy their products, or that there are people of low enough intelligence to find the commercials entertaining and effective.

I’ve gotten to where I try to ignore commercials on television. Whenever possible I record the shows I want to see so that I can fast forward through them, as does the rest of my family. All too often when we see a commercial we end up shaking our heads in disgust at society. We’ve had so many conversations about the rampant stupidity in advertising that none of us really wants to see any of it anymore. I’d suggest that the companies take a look at their advertising and try to make it smarter, but it’s pretty obvious that they don’t care and just want to encourage and spread idiocy and ignorance.

  1. The fact that people do that stuff with their phones in the first place is pretty sad. It’s unfortunately the truth that they’re attempting to mock. And you’re right, it’s not funny at all. It’s such a waste of talent… I wonder what they’re paying them???

  2. I absolutely get so annoyed at 99.9% of commercials on TV, and I resent that they pay these “celebrities” millions of dollars. It sure doesn’t get me to buy the products. In fact, I avoid them. That money could surely be spent on something worthwhile, rather than greed! I mute the commercials when they come on because I don’t need that irritation in my life, and most of them are simply idiotic! I’m sure they pander to the unintelligent who can’t think for themselves. I’m definitely not brainiac, but I do have a lot of common sense.
