Easy Diet Tip: Cut Calories By Cutting Back On Bread

A simple and easy way to reduce your caloric intake

If you’re trying to watch your weight, but you don’t want to make massive changes to your diet, cutting out bread can be a great way to reduce your daily calories without a lot of fuss.

I actually figured this out years ago, when my doctor massively changed my diet to help me with my thyroid disorder. Wheat products are harmful to people with my particular type of thyroid issue, so I had to find alternatives to bread. As a pleasant side effect to eating less bread, I lost weight.

I’m a huge fan of sandwiches; I eat them almost every day for lunch. At first, it sounded like it was going to be a real pain, but over time I got used to it, and it’s something I’ve carried on as a part of my regular eating habits. There are some sandwiches where I still use bread, like the occasional peanut butter and jelly, but for the most part, I can skip the bread without a second thought.

According to the packages in my kitchen, generic white bread has 60 calories per slice (120 calories per sandwich), and small pitas are 150 calories each. Italian bread and other specialty breads can have even more. If you skip the bread, the calories you’re not consuming each month can really add up, which is great if you’re trying to lose weight or maintain your figure.

So how do you have a sandwich without bread? It’s actually quite simple: lettuce. Lettuce makes a great substitute for bread and has a negligible amount of calories, since it’s mostly water. I use either iceberg or romaine, depending on the mood I’m in and how much crunch I want. It can be a little tricky to use Iceberg, since only half of the leaves in a head will be big enough. Romaine works really well since the leaves are long and easy to work with, as well as being of good size except at the very center.

You may have to cut your sandwich fillings down a bit when you’re using lettuce, but other than that, not much changes. Just a few minutes ago I made a “sandwich” of sliced turkey breast, Swiss cheese, olives and a touch of mayo wrapped in a few iceberg leaves. Just roll the leaves around the contents and you’re good to go. One of my other favorites is egg salad with Roma tomato and black olives wrapped in romaine leaves.

If you’re looking to reduce your caloric intake, maintain your weight, or you have wheat allergies, using lettuce instead of bread is a good choice. It works for most things you’d put on bread, it tastes great, and it’s better for you. Romaine in particular is more nutritious than iceberg, and has none of the fat and calories of bread. Try switching to lettuce instead of bread for a while. You’ll lose weight and feel better at the same time.
