Keeping Your Bird Happy and Safe While You’re Not Home

Some tips for keeping your bird happy and safe

As much as we might like to, we can’t spend 24 hours a day with our pets. When you have a pet bird, you should take steps to make sure they’re happy and safe when you’re away at work or school.

One of the most important things to know when leaving your bird alone is to never leave it out of its cage. No matter how well-trained your bird is, leaving it out of its cage while no one is home can be very dangerous. You never know when a car will backfire, a dog will start barking, the phone will ring, or some other noise or even will spook your bird. If your bird feels frightened, it may fall, fly around or otherwise become injured in its panic. You also never know when your bird is going to get curious and start exploring its surroundings and get into trouble. There are too many ways a loose, unattended bird can be injured. Always put them in their cage while you’re away.

Birds that don’t have cage-mates can get very lonely when their people are away. It’s a good idea to leave the television or radio on nearby so they don’t feel abandoned. Music is better than general television for a few reasons. For one thing, a TV show or movie can have unexpected loud noises that might scare your bird. Also, if you have a bird that can learn to mimic, it could learn words from the television. Depending on the channel, this could be a very bad thing, as it might pick up profanity or odd phrases.

Make sure your bird has toys in its cage so it can play while you’re away. Swings and other toys can help your bird stay amused while you’re not there. (Keep in mind that mirrors and bird-shaped toys are a very bad idea. Birds will socially bond with or even try to mate with mirrors and bird-shaped toys. Once they form a bond with the toy, they will see their owner as a threat and possibly become anti-social and aggressive.) It’s also important that you have a big enough cage for the bird to move around easily while he’s confined. Also, always be sure they have enough fresh water and food to get through the day.

If you’re going to be away from home for longer than normal work or school hours, make sure there’s someone else who can look after your bird. At very least someone should check on your pet a few times a day. But if you’re going to be away for a day or more, you should really get someone to pet sit for you. Most birds need social time with people, and time outside their cage. Get a friend or family member to watch over your bird for you if you have to be away for an extended period of time.

With proper care, birds can be wonderful pets. Make sure you take good care of them even when you’re not at home and they will provide you with many years of joy and love.
