Writing Erotica – How to Write Erotic Short Stories

Writing erotica can be fun and even profitable

Erotica refers to a type of writing that incorporates erotic themes. Erotica can range from hard-core to romantic. Here are some tips for writing your own erotic short stories.

I started dabbling with writing erotica in my early twenties to entertain and arouse my partner. In later years I also wrote some for profit. Writing erotica can be fun, and it can even be profitable. However, it’s not as simple as just writing about sex. There’s more to it, and if you want to be good at it, there are a few things you should know.

First of all, there are various types of erotica. Some people think that erotic is simply a politically correct term for pornography, but this is not accurate. Erotica includes hard-core, fetishism, stroke stories, romantica and other types. Each type of erotica appeals to a different type of audience.

Hard core erotica focuses on the gritty details of the sexual experience and can often lack much plot. Fetish erotica deals with subjects like BDSM, water play, adult toys and the like. Stroke stories have plot, but focus on a titillating description of the sexual experience. They are designed to quickly arouse the reader. Romantica refers to stories where the sex is more alluded to than heavily described, and centers on a more detailed romantic plot. There are other forms of erotica as well, and you should familiarize yourself with them if you want to be a serious erotica writer.

Before you start writing, know the type of story you’ll be creating, and try to create a story to go with the sexual content. Depending on the type of erotica you’re creating, you may need to have a great deal of surrounding story, or you might just need to create an engaging sexual scene.

When you’re writing erotica, you don’t necessarily need to have a lot of experience. I have seen erotica writers complain that people think they must be promiscuous or “perverse” in order to write what they do. The truth is, if you can imagine it in enough detail, you can write about it. Making up a sexual situation is no different than making up a scene for any other kind of writing. If you know the basic mechanics behind what you’re talking about, you can make it believable.

You may choose to fictionalize your own experiences in your erotica, or you can use your fantasies and fantasies others have shared with you to create your story. No matter what you use for inspiration, take some time to think about it and ensure that it will be engaging and tantalizing to the reader. Erotica is meant to illicit desire and emotion, so make sure that what you write will do that.

I also suggest writing in a private place. If you’re really getting into what you’re writing, you might spark a reaction within yourself. It might be a little embarrassing to realize you’re getting turned on with friends or children in the room. It’s usually better for your creative flow if you have privacy where you can really imagine the scene and convey it in the writing.

Once you have something written, get someone else to read it. If you’re not shy, you can try submitting it to an erotica writer’s forum for review and constructive criticism. You can also let your partner or someone you trust read the stories, and have them give you their thoughts. Having your partner read the stories can be fun because if it’s good, they’ll have the intended reaction, and it can lead to some real-life erotic encounters. It may even inspire new stories!

Play around with writing different types of erotica and see what works best for you. If you’re not enjoying it, it might not be the right style for you. Personally, I enjoy writing stroke stories, but I couldn’t write romantica to save my life. Do some writing just for the fun of it and see what classification it fits under. That may be the best way to find out what you’re good at.

Once you have a few good stories under your belt, you can try publishing them. The Erotica Readers and Writers Association Call for Submissions page can be a good place to start when looking for someone to publish your work. Have fun with your writing, and don’t get discouraged if you get rejected. Try to make sure you submit the right kind of work to the right place, and you’ll have the best luck.
